Labour Day Tradition Continues Monday

A 115 year tradition continues Monday with the annual Labour Day Parade, hosted by the Sarnia and District Labour Council. The parade along Front Street will get started at 9:30am near Wellington Street, and make its way to Centennial Park. Labour Council President Jason McMichael says this parade is particularly special to Sarnia-Lambton.

"This community was built on organized labour, from the start of the plants and the petrochemical industry. We have the highest skilled trade workers here in Sarnia-Lambton, unions have really paved the way for a strong local economy." This year's team is "Together We Stand Strong, Fair and Equal," which McMichael says is very fitting.

"We're looking to insure workers, regardless of their race, gender or skin colour, they have the same opportunities," says McMichael. "Organized labour has been great at leading the way in that sort of working environment."

For the second year, local politicians will stand in a viewing area rather than march in the parade, which helps keep the event non-partisan. Representatives are expected from all major unions locally. About 40 entries are expected for Monday's parade, including six marching bands.
