Mayor Stonewalled In Suncor Agora Cost Request

Sarnia's mayor says he continues to receive complaints from the public about the lack of information regarding costs and construction delays at Centennial Park.

Mike Bradley says when he asked staff, in writing, for the price tag of the Suncor Agora, he was told they did not have that information, as it was mixed in with the total cost of park remediation.

"The public knows that over $12-million has been spent and they're entitled to answers to their questions. Why that building would open when it was not fully accessible and completed has really created a negative and that's unfortunate," says Bradley. "Suncor's name is on it and they are highly respected in the community, and it's no fault of theirs, which is very unfortunate."

Bradley says he's seen very little construction activity on-site since the Agora was officially opened June 17. The back of the building is still unfinished with siding lying on the ground, partially covered by dirt and weeds.

"I'm only speculating, but I'm thinking the overall contractor who we have had the same issue with when dealing with the unfinished boat ramp is engaged in this part of construction as well," he says.

Acting CAO Scott McEachran has said construction to make the Agora Centre accessible will be done over the next month or so.

Contractor Bre-Ex and consultant Golder Associates have come under fire for ripping out the former boat launch before a new one could be installed.

That work has also been on hold for months with no end date in sight.
