SMAA Baseball Program At Risk Of Folding

The Sarnia Minor Athletic Association (SMAA) baseball program, in operation since 1947, will be forced to fold next year without additional volunteer help.

The organization only had 14 volunteers for 28 jobs this past season.

Four appointees to the 2017 executive committee are expected to leave the organization by the end of September.

Chairperson Steve Hamilton says that isn't sustainable.

"With us doing twice as much work as we can kind of handle, it's been very difficult," says Hamilton. "I had asked for volunteers last month and I didn't really get much of a response. I put out a more urgent request for volunteers to step forward. Hopefully that will bring more interest, and they're starting to trickle in."

Hamilton says they will be able to resurrect the program in time for the 2018 season if enough volunteers are recruited this fall.

"This is our 71st year and we'd hate to not be running next year. We do have to get some more people in, and hopefully some younger people that maybe come with some fresh ideas and more energy than us older people that are still there working away," he says.

Positions include eight division convenors, secretary, treasurer, equipment director, uniform director, and scheduler.

Those interested in volunteering can call Steve at 519-331-4252 or email stv55555@cogeco.ca.
