GPS Focused Tractor Driver Causes Major Power Outage

Lambton OPP say there were no injuries and no charges will be laid after a farm tractor caused a major power outage Monday afternoon.

Police say the tractor collided with two hydro poles in the 4900-block of Churchill Line in Enniskillen Township around 3:30pm.

Constable Travis Parsons says the collision brought six wires down on the tractor and the operator was trapped inside for several hours.

"The investigation led us to believe that the operator of the tractor was following a GPS (Global Positioning Unit) in the tractor," says Parsons. "In operating the tractor they were ensuring that the track they were following was straight by looking behind them and as they looked forward again they inadvertently ran into the hydro poles."

Hydro One says service was disrupted for over 17,000 customers for several hours, in Lambton County and neighbouring Middlesex County.

Bluewater Power and Entegrus customers were among those affected.

Power was restored just after 8pm.
