Bones Not Part Of Significant Burial Site

It's been determined that a cranium discovered April 26 at 1552 Colborne Rd. near Lakeshore Rd. was an irregular burial site and not a significant heritage resource.

City Deputy Clerk James Jenkins says two additional human bone fragments were determined to be from the skull and were released to Aamjiwnaang First Nation for interment.

"The total cost of the archaeological investigation was just over $26,000," says Jenkins. "The City of Sarnia has to pay for the investigation just as any landowner would have to do if there was the possibility of a burial site discovered on their land. We were bound by the same process that any landowner would be bound by as it was found on the city owned boulevard."

The remains, which were over 100 years old, were found near a home owners property line where sewers were being extended to new home builds just north of Lakeshore Rd.

Work will resume when the Registrar of Burial sites approves the archaeological report.
