Train Sparks A Mile Of Grass Fires

Sarnia fire officials say city and Imperial fire crews were able to stop a series of grass fires along Scott Rd. from causing any property damage Tuesday afternoon.

Platoon Chief Bill Sheane says they were initially dispatched to a fire along the railroad tracks south of Churchill Rd.

"We responded with three different stations," says Sheane. "There was also a fire right near ESSO. They called a Code 8 just after noon and responded with multiple trucks and their fire brigade. We worked together to get those fires out, and there was about a mile of spot fires all along the tracks."

Sheane says rail authorities were notified, the tracks were shut down and the train that was believed to be sparking the fires was stopped.

He says the fires were brought under control before impacting any buildings or businesses in the various locations.

Sarnia police set up road blocks before 1pm at St. Andrew St. and Vidal St. S. and at Scott Rd. and Churchill Rd. for public safety. The roads were reopened around 2pm.

There was a similar incident in May of 2015 when a train sparked a number of fires along the CN tracks from St. Andrew St. to south of Hwy. 40 as well as another blaze in the rail yard.
