OPP To Watch Over Mackinac Festivities

Ontario Provincial Police will be visible at Saturday's Port Huron to Mackinac sailboat race.

Sergeant Dave Rektor says these type of events are well orchestrated and involve many partners including the Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard.

"Lambton County OPP will have two of our vessels in the water for this occasion, a 32 ft hike and 23 ft seaswirl," says Rektor.

He says they just want to make sure everyone is safe and having a good time.

"The OPP always encourages people to proactive personal safety, especially on the waterways. It only takes a second for tragedy to strike. Things like making sure you're wearing a lifejacket or PFD, rather than sitting on it, are always a great idea," says Rektor.

There are 209 boats with over 2,000 crew members entered in the 93rd annual race.

Five boats from the Sarnia Yacht Club are participating this year.
