Flaming Combine Sets Field Ablaze

Petrolia and North Enniskillen firefighters responded to their first combine fire of the season Thursday night -- and they're hoping it's their last.

Divisional Chief Brian Clark says they were called to 4277 Rokeby Line, west of Oil Heritage Rd. around 8pm.

"Upon our arrival the combine was fully engulfed and about three to four acres of straw was on fire as well," says Clark.

He says firefighters had to endure heat and humidity, but were able to extinguish the burning farm machinery and stop the flames from spreading through the field, which had already been harvested.

"Of course with combines you have to struggle to get all of the compartments open to get access and put the fire out," says Clark. "The other section of my crew we sent to the field to put the field fire out with our tanker and make quick work of that."

There were no injuries.

Clark says it was an older model combine but a dollar estimate of the loss wasn't immediately known.
