Cool winds didn't deter people from taking part in Sarnia's 39th annual St. Clair River seniors cruise aboard the Duc D'Orleans Monday.
The yearly tradition was started by former long time CHOK Hotline host, the late Peter Henderson.
It was the first cruise for Sylvia Haffen, who recently moved to Sarnia from Newfoundland.
"We came in November to visit my aunt and uncle," says Haffen. "We were here for two days and put an offer in on a house and moved December 27 across Canada."
She says relocating here was an easy decision.
"They cater so much to seniors, I find, in Sarnia," says Haffen. "Everything is all about seniors. It's wonderful!"
Haffen says she's also been quite pleased by the weather here.
"The weather is unbelievable," she says. "If I had to compare Florida to Sarnia, I would say Sarnia."
Cruise spokesperson Marnie Thomas expected as many as 1,800 seniors to make their way down to the Front St. dock for some food and a boat ride.
"It's a wonderful tradition and you carry it on because you see peoples faces when they come off the boat and they're always looking forward to it year after year," says Thomas.
Rain moved in around 3:30pm and the last cruise of the day, added due to popularity, was cancelled. Thomas says seniors with tickets for that cruise can present them any time this summer and their ride will be honoured.
She says they really need donations to keep the event going.
Thomas says many of their signs promoting the cruise have gone missing this year.
