Police Investigating Geese Hit By Vehicle

Sarnia police are investigating reports that an SUV struck three geese on Lake Chipican Dr. in Canatara Park just before 1pm Sunday.

Constable John Sottosanti says they were alerted by witnesses who said one bird had been killed and two injured.

"We normally investigate the criminal aspect of it," says Sottosanti. "The criminal aspect, Highway Traffic Act, municipal bylaws, that's what we enforce. Ministry of Natural Resources and Wildlife's Conservation Officers look into other Acts that we rarely get involved in."

Witnesses say the suspect vehicle slowed down, then sped up, striking the birds. They took photos of the vehicle and licence plate and posted them to social media.

Constable Sottosanti says that can be risky. He advises anyone taking a photo of an alleged crime to forward the images to police.

"You have to be sure, just like when we lay charges you don't make unsubstantiated claims," he says. "If you're going to make an accusation and put it out there for all to see, you better have your i's dotted and your t's crossed. You just don't want to allege someone did something."

Traffic was heavy in Canatara at the time with the Sarnia Street Machines car show being held there and the geese had been holding up traffic.
