Construction Of New Green St. Pumping Station Possible This Fall

Another major part of a $45-million upgrade to the city's wastewater system will go to tender this summer.

City of Sarnia Operations Manager Bryan Prouse says the project will go to tender this summer after an environmental assessment found the current pumping station at Green St. and Marion Ave. in Brights Grove is running at over capacity.

"The recommended alternative was a new pumping station to be built at the southwest corner of Waterworks Rd. and Lakeshore Rd. to handle about half the sewage that's generated in Brights Grove and pump it to the new lagoon facility," says Prouse. "This is one of the projects that is included in the $45-million wastewater upgrade the city is undertaking. We're also going forward with a $30-million replacement of the aging Bedford Sanitary Pump Station on the hydro right-of-way next to the Howard Watson Nature Trail between Wellington St. and Confederation St. It was built back in the 1970s and handles all the waste water east of Murphy Rd. within the urban area of Sarnia and it is vastly over capacity. When we have heavy rain, the pump station cannot keep up, and unfortunately the sewage backs up and we have had some basement problems over the years, on Pontiac Court and Sherwood, among other places.”

The cost will be split between the city, and the provincial and federal governments.
