Public Consultation Planned On Jackson Pool

Sarnia council has authorized staff to proceed with public consultation for the reopening of Jackson Pool and a multi-purpose gathering place.

Councillor Cindy Scholten says residents need to have a clear understanding of the costs associated with the project.

"Do I think the gathering place is a good idea? Yes I do," says Scholten. "But, I don't think it's what the people of Sarnia want at this time."

She says citizens she's spoke with want to reopen Jackson Pool.

"They want affordable swimming lessons, offered in this central location at Germain," says Scholten. "They want to have a 25 m pool with lane rope capability. The want to open swim in a pool that is not overcrowded. They want to have a public pool available for competitive swimming. They want a pool that does not require costly memberships of any kind, or require transportation to get there."

Scholten says residents have provided names of volunteers for lifeguard employment and already initiated fundraising efforts to reopen the pool.

She thinks it could happen if the city uses its new sponsorship plan, partnered with community fundraising.

Staff have been asked to report back early this fall.
