Cost Of Centennial Park Remediation Rises Again

The cost of remediating Centennial Park, last estimated at more than $11-million, is increasing by nearly another $1-million.

City hall released staff reports late Wednesday afternoon updating the Harbour Rd. Watermain Project, the Site Services Building and the new boat ramp.

Sarnia council is being asked Monday to approve the transfer of an additional $400,000 for Harbour Rd.

The money will pay for grading, topsoil and grass seed for 4,600 square meters in one area of the park (the Phase 1 area) and to complete asphalt and curb repairs in the parking lots off Harbour Rd. and Front St.

More money, over $500,000, is also needed to complete the new site services building, despite a $250,000 naming rights and sponsorship agreement with Suncor Energy for the new outdoor stage and gathering area.

Council is being asked to approve almost $270,000 in capital spending to complete the job, while another $252,000 was funded through the contingency allowance included in the construction contract with Bre-Ex Construction.

Staff also say nearly $8,000 will be spent to retrofit the boat ramp at Bridgeview Marina, to ensure recreational boaters, anglers and emergency responders have reasonable use until the new ramp at Sarnia Bay Marina is operational.

They say they do not have a completion date for the city boat ramp and are recommending that fees be waived in the meantime.
