'Suncor Agora' At Centennial Park Announced

The City of Sarnia has announced a Naming Rights and Sponsorship Agreement with Suncor Energy for the new outdoor stage and gathering area at Centennial Park.

Suncor spokesperson Jennifer Johnson says they're proud to work with the city to support the park's reopening.

"The commitment is to sponsor the park for 12 years and Suncor Energy is contributing $250,000," says Johnson.

She says they went to their refinery employees and a shift supervisor came up with the name for the sponsored area.

It'll be called the Suncor Agora which means "gathering place" in Greek.

"In ancient times the Agora was the center of athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life of the city," she says. "Once we learned what the term Agora meant, we really felt that it really embodied what the role of the gathering space at Centennial Park will once again play in our community."

The city says the $250,000 will go directly towards enhancements and improvements to the facility and immediate surrounding area.

Council is expected to approve the partnership at its meeting May 29 and a formal public announcement will be made at the Centennial Park Celebration and Everything Ontario event June 17.
