Purple ribbons will be placed at two Sarnia intersections Wednesday morning where deadly crashes occurred in the past.
The Lambton Drug Awareness Committee organizes the campaign around the Victoria Day long weekend each year, as a stark reminder not to drink and drive.
Sarnia police Constable Nelson Amaral says they will be placed at the intersections of Modeland Rd. and Michigan Ave. and Mitton and George streets on Wednesday.
"This year's purple ribbons will symbolize a respectful remembrance of the ten and 20-year anniversaries of two [among many] local fatal collisions tragically caused by impaired drivers," says Amaral.
Michael Parkes and his friend and co-worker Gary Abbey were killed in a drunk driving collision in November 1997 at Michigan and Modeland and Roberta MacIntosh was struck and killed by a drunk driver at Mitton and George Streets in January 2007.
Constable Amaral says impaired driving is still very much a problem in the community with 46 people being charged in 2016, compared to 39 in 2015.
He reminds residents that the offence of impaired driving applies to any motorized vehicle, vessel or aircraft and that impairment can be by alcohol or drug including prescription drugs.
Family and friends or anyone wishing to show their support are invited to attend the intersection of Modeland and Michigan at 10am and Mitton and George streets at 11am.
