Afternoon Storm Brings Strong Winds, Rain (GALLERY)

Thunderstorms tore through parts of Sarnia and Lambton County on Sunday, bringing damaging winds and temporarily flooding some streets.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement late in the afternoon ahead of a cold front that swept through Southwestern Ontario, bringing wind gusts up to 70 km/h and very heavy downpours of 15 to 25 mm of rain in under an hour.

Damaging winds were reported at around 4:45pm at the St. Clair Parkway Golf Course in Mooretown.  A number of trees were blown over and branches were strewn about the course during the storm.

Streets in Sarnia also saw some flooding due to heavy downpours.  Indian Rd. north of London Rd. and Maxwell St. in particular saw significant ponding.

At around 5:25pm Imperial Oil had an overflow of water to the St. Clair River as a result of the heavy rain storm.

No impact downstream was expected but the refinery was monitoring water quality.

The "Spills Action Centre" of the Ministry of Environment was notified.
