No Decision Yet On Watford's Centennial Hall

Warwick Township Council wants all the bases covered before it decides whether to upgrade or rebuild Watford's Centennial Hall.

A engineering report released in late January recommended the 50-year-old building be closed because it's in poor condition and has several building code violations.

Mayor Todd Case says council tabled a staff report Monday night and will discuss the matter again at a future special meeting.

"The report outlines a variety of options," he says. "Council is on record that we do need a community hall, but the report is not specific on costs, so we don't know exactly how much it would cost to renovate that hall. We have some rough estimates and we don't have a real number on the cost of building a new hall. That's the type of thing that will be discussed at a special meeting."

The engineering report estimated it would cost about $525,000 to upgrade Centennial Hall and about $1.8-million to build a 6,000 sq ft replacement.

Watford celebrated Canada's 100th birthday in 1967 by opening Centennial Hall.
