Canoe And Kayak Race Set For Sunday

About 80 canoes and kayaks will be out on the Sydenham River Sunday morning. St. Clair Region Conservation Authority is once again hosting its annual Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race. Education Coordinator Sharon Nethercott says they expect about 160 people on the water Sunday morning, with registration set for 10am and the race getting underway at 11am. She says it's a great opportunity for people to get outdoors and take in some local scenery. "The Sydenham is a beautiful river, it's the only river that's entirely Carolinian zone. It's a great spot to do some bird watching and check out all the wildlife." Nethercott says they have 11 classes, with a 7km, 12km and 16km route.

"The similar classes are all 7km and they all go with the current, the competitive classes are a bit longer and some of them you will have to paddle against the current. All the classes start in the same location and end in the same location."

Classes begin on Mosside Road just west of County Road 79, and finishes at the Shetland Conservation Area on Bentpath Line. The race is sanctioned by the Ontario Marathon Canoe and Kayak Racers Association.
