Green Party Leader Commends Sarnia For Embracing Clean Technology

The leader of Ontario's Green Party says he's very impressed with how Sarnia is embracing the clean economy.

Mike Schreiner held a roundtable discussion at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre Tuesday as part of his spring tour of southwestern Ontario.

He says Sarnia is leading the transition away from fossil fuels.

"I know it's not going to be an easy transition," says Schreiner. "Change is never easy. But, the fact that Sarnia is taking such a leadership position, I think is pretty inspiring and it's a story that I want to learn more about and talk about."

Schreiner adds, however, that he supports NOVA Chemicals proposed building of a second polyethylene plant in the area, as long as regulations are followed.

"We need economic development that meets strict guidelines that protect our communities and so as long as you're bringing in technology and you're doing it in a way that isn't contributing to climate change and isn't threatening our drinking water and the health and well-being of our communities, we're all for it," says Schreiner.

A site on Rokeby Line south of NOVA’s existing Corunna plant is under consideration for the potential $2-billion plant.

Schreiner visited London Monday and will travel to Windsor Wednesday.
