Two More Arrests Made At Former SGH Site

Sarnia police have made a pair of arrests in connection with yet another attempted theft of copper wire from the former Sarnia General Hospital site on Mitton St.

Around 2pm Wednesday, members of the COPPS Unit saw two people leaving the building on foot.

After a brief pursuit, officers arrested two men, allegedly in possession of a gym bag containing work gloves, hacksaws, and bolt cutters.

Two males, aged 19 and 17, are charged with break and enter and possession of break and enter tools.

Police say the 19-year-old had an outstanding warrant for break and enter and other property related crimes.

The 19-year-old was being held for a bail hearing while the 17-year-old was released on a promise to appear.

At Monday's meeting, city council passed a motion put forward by councillor Bev MacDougall asking that police step up patrols around the derelict building.

"My husband and I were walking by the facility the other night, and entire window frames are now being ripped out of the facility and thrown onto the sidewalk," says MacDougall.

Sarnia Police Chief Phil Nelson told the police services board this morning that he expects to present a report to the board next month updating the ongoing community and policing efforts at the vacant property.
