New Scholarship For Point Edward Students

A new scholarship has been created in honour of long time Point Edward residents Maynard and Rene Walker.

Mayor Bev Hand says the successful applicant will receive $5,000 U.S. each year for the first two years of post-secondary education.

"Key criteria for identifying the winning applicant will be high school grades and contributions to the Village of Point Edward. Mary Ellen Walker's gift to the young people of Point Edward is heartwarming. The spirit of the village is about our roots and how we support each other," she says.

"The Walker family has been an important part of the Village for many years and we appreciate that Mary Ellen has remembered her roots, to support the young people of this community in attaining their future goals. What a wonderful way for Maynard and Rene Walker to be remembered."

Maynard Walker was born on Michigan Ave. in 1926 and lived on the same street until his death in 2014 with his new bride Rene moving in with him in 1949.

Maynard was a long time firefighter and Chief from 1956 to 1979. Rene now resides at Afton Park.

Their daughter, Mary Ellen, who currently resides in the U.S., is the creator of the scholarship. Further application details can be found on the village website, www.villageofpointedward.com
