Drouin Nominated For Provincial Award

Corunna's Derek Drouin has been nominated for the 2016 Syl Apps Ontario Athlete of the Year Award.

Although he's up against some serious competition, Drouin's year was as impressive as any Ontario athlete. The 26-year-old didn’t miss a single jump in his Olympic final in Rio, as he soared to the top of the podium with a season best jump of 2.38 m (7.8 ft).

Drouin is just the sixth high jumper, male or female, to win Olympic gold without missing a single jump.

Drouin has made several appearances in his hometown since his gold medal win. Corunna basically shut down on August 27, as thousands of people were in attendance when the town honoured Drouin with a parade and celebration along Lyndoch St.

In November, Drouin shared his Olympic stories with the students at his former elementary school, St. Joseph's Catholic School.

Several other gold medalist are also nominated, including Andre De Grasse, Rosie MacLennan, Penny Oleksiak and Erica Wiebe. Londoner Damian Warner, who won bronze in decathlon is nominated as well. So is teenage golfer Brooke Henderson, who became the second youngest woman to win a major championship in June with her victory at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.
