Maroons Top Legionnaires In High Scoring Game

The Sarnia Legionnaires (21-22-0-6) capped off their regular season home schedule with a hard fought 7-5 loss to the Chatham Maroons (36-11-0-1) in GOJHL play Thursday night at the Brock St. Barn.

Jarret Marks opened the scoring for the Legionnaires at 6:05 of the opening frame and captain Brett Storr made it 2-0 just three minutes later on a seeing-eye point shot. Chatham cut Sarnia's lead to 2-1 with a quick shot off the offensive zone face off by Nolan VandenBoorn.

Sting prospect and Maroons defenceman Braden Henderson tied the game 2-2 just 1:07 into the second frame. Jake Vince put Sarnia back ahead 3-2 just two minutes later on a wrist shot from the far side half boards. Chatham went on to score three straight goals, including two by Austin Thompson and VandenBoorn's second of the contest. Joey Zappa edged Sarnia closer with a late second period marker to make it 5-4.

The Legionnaires came out flying in the third period, and Alec DeKoning tied the game 5-5. Chatham's Josh King potted the game winner, and Kevin Gursoy sealed the victory with a late empty netter.

Sarnia goalie Jorgen Johnson made 35 saves on 41 shots against, Brendan Johnston stopped 34 of 39 Legionnaire shots.

Legoionnaires forward Zach Vanderwal and Chatham's Brendan D'Agostino each dished out three assists in the contest. Austin Thompson added a pair of helpers to give him four points on the night.

Sarnia's Curtis Egert and Chatham's Jake O'Donnell got into a spirited fight in the first period and were each handed game misconducts.

The Legionnaires return to action Saturday in Strathroy before heading to Leamington for game one of the playoffs March 2 on CHOK. Chatham plays Friday in St. Marys and hosts London on Sunday.
