Suspect Faces Numerous Charges In Robbery

A Sarnia man has been arrested and is facing charges in connection with a robbery at LocaLender Plus on Confederation St.

On Tuesday around 10:30am, police say a man wearing a hoody and toque to conceal his identity, entered the business claiming to be armed with a gun and demanded money from the clerk. He then fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Constable John Sottosanti says a suspect was arrested just over two hours later, not far from the scene, in the area of Confederation St. and Lansdowne Ave.

He alleges that the suspect initially gave a false name, but officers were able to determine his identity and discovered he was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

Sottosanti also alleges that the suspect struggled with police and tried to flee.

"Police were able to restrain the suspect and place him under arrest," says Sottosanti. "As members of the Criminal Investigations Branch continued to receive information about the robbery and the suspect, it was determined that the 28-year-old who, was arrested earlier for outstanding warrants and resisting police, was also the suspect in the robbery."

Jonathan Michael Hughes, 28, has been charged with robbery with violence, assault with a weapon, 11 counts of breach of probation, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of a controlled substance and resisting a peace officer.

Police continue to investigate and anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Sean Peters at 519-344-8861 ext. 6197, Detective Sergeant Michael Kahnert at ext. 6196, or Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers.
