Officer Faces Criminal Charges In Dawn-Euphemia ATV Crash

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has laid criminal charges against an Ontario Provincial Police officer in connection with an ATV collision in Dawn-Euphemia last summer.

The SIU says during the evening of June 22, 2016, a 24-year-old man operating an all terrain vehicle was involved in a motor vehicle collision and sustained serious injuries.

As a result of the SIU investigation, Constable Sean Coughlan faces charges of criminal negligence causing bodliy harm, obstructing a peace officer, obstructing justice and perjury.

Coughlan was arrested Friday and is to appear in Sarnia court February 28, 2017.

The SIU says it will make no further comment with the matter now before the courts.

BlackburnNews.com reported last June that a man had been airlifted to hospital in London with life threatening injuries following the ATV crash in Dawn-Euphemia.

At the time, the OPP reported that around 8:30pm, officers had witnessed a motor vehicle travelling east on Bilton Line at a high rate of speed. Officers began patrolling the area and discovered an ATV had rolled over into a south ditch, leaving the driver lying on the road.

Bilton Rd., between Annett Rd. and Kerry Rd. was closed for several hours.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
