Alvinston Minor Ball Unveils Riverhawks Name

Alvinston Minor Baseball has selected a new name. The organization will now be known as the Riverhawks.

The organization began fundraising efforts last year to make the change from their controversial former name, the Alvinston Indians.

They were able to collect $29,000 in just six days.

The Riverhawks are thanking Mackenzie Shaw, Kate Baresich, George Van Damme, Karen Van Damme, and Connor Cumming who submitted wonderful concepts of logos that were considered up until the end.

President Andy Triest says the name came down to either the Aces or Riverhawks.

"The Aces would have been an easy choice I think, just based on the history of the name," says Triest. "There was a men's team in Alvinston in the late 80's that went with the Aces. We ultimately went with something that the kids would perhaps better associate with. I think kids would probably think it's cooler to be a riverhawk than it is to be an ace."

He says there's been support from the local community.

"Really the reaction from everyone has been very positive," says Triest. "Riverhawks is very different, I think it's maybe something no one was really expecting but the reaction has been really positive."

The logo was designed by Markham-based Boorne Canadian Graphics.

The Riverhawks say registration dates are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
