City Considering Crossing Guard Cutbacks

Cutting back or removing crossing guard service at some school crossings will be discussed by Sarnia council Monday.

It's recommended council approve seven amendments to the city's school crossing guard program.

Mayor Mike Bradley says it's always a difficult issue.

"There has been a policy put in place by council and there has been contact made with the respective schools," said Bradley. "It's not clear to me, but I hope that the message went back to parents that there may be crossing guards removed at certain locations."

Bradley says some of the locations don't justify having a guard, given their very limited use.

"Several of the crossings it's immaterial because the students aren't allowed to leave the schools at lunch time, but when you're dealing with public safety and young children it needs to be a community based decision, not just city council saying 'let's remove them.'"

According to staff's report, the decision to cut back or remove crossing guard service may be made for a number of reasons, including; school closures, boundary changes, a change in traffic patterns or in some cases the minimum number of students using the crossing is no longer met.

Staff are recommending...

  • removing the guarded crossing at Christina St. and Durand St. and all times associated with it.
  • removing the guarded crossing at Confederation St. and Ontario St. and all times associated with it.
  • removing the lunch 2 time at Bradford Dr. and Murphy Rd.
  • removing the lunch 2 time at Willa Dr. and Kember Ave.
  • removing the lunch 2 time at Oak Ave. and Indian Rd.
  • removing the lunch 1 and lunch 2 time at Murphy Rd. and Leckie Dr.
  • removing the lunch 1 time at the guarded crossing at Cathcart Blvd. and Grace Ave.
