Legionnaires Fall To Stars To Extend Losing Streak

The Sarnia Legionnaires (16-17-0-1) were doubled up 6-3 by the visiting St. Thomas Stars (11-18-1-2) in GOJHL action Thursday night for their ninth straight loss.

Curtis Egert led the way for the Legionnaires with two goals and an assist.

St. Thomas jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 1:37 into the game on a goal off the stick of Alex Turko. Egert tipped home both of his goals to pull Sarnia ahead 2-1 after one period.

Second period tallies by Ryan Brown and Jackson Brown put the Stars ahead 3-2 in the first seven minutes. Alec DeKoning scored a powerplay marker with just five seconds remaining in the period on a nice deke. For DeKoning, it was his 13th goal of the season to match Joey Zappa for first place on the team.

In the third period, Kevin Hu and Christian Clarke scored powerplay goals to pull St. Thomas ahead 5-3, and Ryan Brown added an empty netter to seal the victory.

Legionnaires goalie Jorgen Johnson made 21 saves on 27 shots, while Dan Black made 26 saves in the St. Thomas crease.

Sarnia sits 5th in the Western Conference standings with 33 points, 22 back of LaSalle for first place, and six ahead of the sixth place Strathroy Rockets.

The Legionnaires have struggled against St. Thomas this season, having lost four of the five meetings. The Stars have only won three games on the road all season, including a pair at Sarnia Arena.

The Legionnaires return to action January 5 at home to the London Nationals at the Brock St. Barn at 7pm on CHOK.
