Decision On Skilbeck Cottage Heritage Designation Expected

Sarnia Council will decide Monday whether or not to designate the property at 112 Maria St. under the Heritage Act.

Staff is recommending council approves a by-law to designate the property.

Councillor Bev MacDougall doesn't foresee any objection to the proposal.

"No, I wouldn't think we would receive any objections at all," says MacDougall. "Typically when these properties move through a request for designation, it's because the owners are wanting that notoriety of their property and it's a case of pride and a desire to share."

The home, commonly referred to as Skilbeck Cottage, was built and named after Robert Skilbeck, one of Sarnia's first businessmen.

In 1847, Sarnia's first money-lending institution was run out of the back room of the brick house because there was no bank in the city until 1852.

The "Syndicate", as it was known, eventually was incorporated as "The Building and Investment Company", the oldest Trust Company in Canada.
