City Police Officer Charged With Assault

A Sarnia police officer faces an assault charge in connection with an incident involving a teenage girl last month.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit was called to look into the incident that occurred shortly after 6pm May 12 at the intersection of Capel St. and Exmouth St.

A 16-year-old female was taken to Bluewater Health where she was treated for a broken arm.

SIU Director Tony Loparco says as a result of the investigation Constable Anthony Vennettilli is charged with assault causing bodily harm and is to appear in Sarnia court August 2.

Sarnia police chief Phil Nelson says the officer has been placed on administrative duty until further notice.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
