Sarnia's Heritage Committee has asked for a second tour of SCITS high school to further assess possible heritage designation for the site.
Lambton Kent District School Board trustees were told Tuesday evening that the committee will bring forward recommendations to Sarnia City Council, which ultimately will make the final decision.
If heritage designation is approved, that status would be maintained if the building is sold or repurposed in the future.
Director of Education Jim Costello says right now, there is no plan for its future use.
"We don't know yet, we have to take a look and see if we can find a use for it," he says. "If not, we declare it surplus. It then would get offered - when the time comes, we're atleast a year, year and a half away from that - then it would get offered to other public sector organizations to purchase at market value and if they didn't, it would then go on the market for sale."
Trustees voted 9-2 last night to close SCITS in 2017 and amalgamate students at St. Clair Secondary School.

Trustees also approved a recommendation Tuesday to establish an Ad Hoc Naming Committee this June, with two trustees, among others, to take part in that process.
It's expected trustees will consider approval of a new name for the consolidated school in October.
