Syrup Producer Says Season Not Up To Par

A local maple syrup producer says the syrup flow was not up to par this season.

Many producers in Ontario and Quebec were not satisfied with the cold weather pushing into the spring.

"From what I'm hearing in this part of Ontario, it wasn't a record-breaking year," says Al Williams, owner and operator of Williamson Farms. "It was just barely normal because of the weather. Like the weather was cold and then when it turned warm, it stayed warm."

Williamson says the weather influenced the slight shortage.

"We need the freezing and thawing and we didn't get enough of that during the season. We've had poorer years but we've had better years too," he says.

Williamson says the price of syrup should not be affected by the changes of maple syrup production.

"I don't think the price is going to change a whole lot," he says. "There is syrup available in other parts of the country. There is syrup available, it's not like there's a shortage totally."

Members of a sugar bush in Pakenham, Ontario, outside of Ottawa say they had a remarkable season.
