Unique Boardwalk Proposal Floated For City Waterfront (Gallery)

Sarnia-based architect David Lavender has ambitious plans for Sarnia's waterfront to coincide with Canada's 150th birthday in 2017.

Dubbed Riverwalk 24/7/365, plans call for a 200 m boardwalk to be built along the point lands, extending into the St. Clair River and include a pavilion.

Lavender says it'll pay homage to First Nation groups and Chemical Valley workers.

"The dome shape is a wigwam form reminiscent of the summer shelters that First Nation people historically used," says Lavender.

"The use of stainless steel and the grill and the flame is reminiscent of all the fine metal work that's ever been done in the Chemical Valley."

Lavender says the estimated $2-million project could receive funding from a number of sources including local industry and the federal and provincial governments.

Pending approval, he's hopeful construction will begin as soon as possible, adding it'll be free for the public to enjoy.
