Some Fans Stung By Illegal Parking Crackdown

After several complaints from security staff at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre, city bylaw staff were called to help enforce parking restrictions.

Security staff claim things were getting out of hand at recent Sting games.

Mayor Mike Bradley says SSEC staff are not authorized to issue tickets, and were limited in what action they could take to enforce parking restrictions.

"The understanding I have from staff involved is that people were parking in fire zones and handicapped spots," says Bradley. "There had also been some other issues that related to the safety of some of the workers at the SSEC too, so they took some action to deal with that last night and people did receive tickets."

$1,400 in fines were issued during Tuesday night's sold out Sarnia Sting playoff loss.

City Manager of Buildings and Bylaw Enforcement Allan Shaw says security staff at the arena have encountered problems advising people they can't park in certain areas.

"They were actually being verbally abused and in one case an individual was almost struck by a citizen trying to park their vehicle where they shouldn't have been," says Shaw.
