Committee Narrows Options For SCITS

The Lambton Kent District School Board's Accommodation Review Committee is considering saving Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School (SCITS).

During its February 16 working meeting, committee members narrowed down their options to close either SCITS or St. Clair Secondary School and amalgamate students at the other site.

Other options that have been removed from the table include consolidating elementary students at the sites, making the schools Grade 7-12, and closing an additional Sarnia secondary school to consolidate all three at a new school.

Superintendent of Education Gary Girardi confirmed the information Tuesday, which is also available through a record of action document on the school board's website.

"The committee has asked us questions in regard to that option, as well as other options," says Girardi. "We'll be responding to those questions at the next meeting."

Girardi recognizes the Save SCITS group has been vocal on social media stating "the one surviving proposal" challenging the initial proposal "is the amalgamation of students at SCITS."

He says the school board is yet to write its final report and is open to examining all options at this time.

The next Accommodation Review Committee meeting is scheduled for March 8 at SCITS.
