New Partnership Could See YMCA At Walpole Island

The YMCA and and Walpole Island First Nation have announced a partnership that could potentially bring a YMCA to the community.

President and CEO of YMCAs in southwestern Ontario Jim Janzen says it would be the first "Y" in a First Nation community in the region.

He says they are looking at different ways to utilize existing facilities.

"There's a hockey arena, a recreation centre and youth centre. We're working with the Y to bring those things together, possibly under one roof," says Janzen. "But we're also looking at the needs of the community, being very mindful that we are working with aboriginal people and want to be able to do the kind of work that makes sense for them."

Janzen says they have been in constant communication with the Community Planning Coordinator for Walpole Island Aimee Johnson, to outline some of the needs that should be addressed.
