Mobile Marketing Helps Businesses Stand Out

The Town of Petrolia is hoping to put local businesses on the map by focusing on 'micro-moments' and mobile-marketing.

During a presentation at Victoria Playhouse Petrolia Friday, Google representative Alex Marks said businesses embracing mobile consumers will succeed in the digital age.

His advice to local business owners included registering as a Google 'My Business' and making themselves available when consumers search online for a service.

Petrolia Mayor John McCharles says it has become increasingly important to be online.

"Well I think it's to realize how much that the mobile and internet has to do with business. The majority of people now are looking on the internet to find the products they need," says McCharles. "With this, it's a learning curve for everyone, but it's just another step towards success."

In 2014, 400,000 babies were born and 4-million mobile devices were sold.

Marks says today's digital age is no longer people browsing on a desktop online for hours at a time, but rather short bursts of engagement via on-the-go mobile devices.

According to 2014 statistics, people used their smartphones 150 times a day for only 170 minutes total.
