The City of Sarnia is considering a trap/neuter/release service that would successfully control feral and stray cat populations.
A representative from Cat Chance addressed Sarnia City Council in a delegation Monday.
The grassroots group has six to eight volunteers that trap community cats and bring them to a London clinic to be spayed or neutered, then return them to the area they were captured.
Cat Chance Founder LeeAnne Symington says they're looking for city funding to control cat populations over time.
"We take a lot of care in what we do and use the most humane traps," says Symington.
"I don't even like calling them traps, I like calling them lure crates. We have a lot of strict rules on how the cats are handled and that's one thing that we are known for."
It would cost the city $2,600 for 40 cats, and $4,875 for 75 cats in the targeted areas of Sherwood Village, Kathleen St. and Queen St. over a 12 to 20 week period.
The service has proved successful in other areas including Toronto, Windsor, London and Essex.
Sarnia council has asked for a staff report detailing more information.
