Lakeshore Rd. Speed Limit Could Stay

The speed limit on Lakeshore Rd. between Telfer Rd. and Mandaumin Rd. may stay at 70 km/h.

Sarnia council is being asked to endorse a County of Lambton report Monday that recommends against lowering the limit to 50 km/h.

Mayor Mike Bradley says Lakeshore Rd. is a county road, but city staff were asked to gather public input.

"We've had varying speed limits along Lakeshore there, and I think in the past it's just created more confusion," he says. "This would seem to be a solid recommendation. Based on the feedback from the commercial area, based on what the engineers are telling us, that just to leave it at 70 km/h, it's safe.

"If there's issues of speeding that's an enforcement issue, that's not a speed limit issue."

Local owners and tenants in the commercial area were consulted, many of which had signed a petition to reduce the speed limit.

The report found conflicting views with many not supporting a speed reduction or being indifferent to change.
