Legionnaires Bitten By Vipers

The Sarnia Legionnaires had their four game winning streak snapped with a 3-1 loss at the hands of the visiting LaSalle Vipers in GOJHL hockey play Thursday night.

LaSalle's Nathan Savage split the defence and potted a back hand goal shorthanded 7:43 into the first period. Savage scored his second goal of the game just three minutes later. Daniel Beaudoin assisted on both goals.

After a scoreless second period, Brandon Layman pulled the Legionnaires to within a goal with his 21st goal of the season 12:47 into the third. Ryan Vendramin and Brock Perry assisted on the goal. That's as close as the Legionnaires would come as Daniel Beaudoin scored an empty net goal with 30 seconds left in the third period.

There was some controversy when a Vipers player opened the door to the bench, causing Sarnia's Jarret Marks to fall into it. Marks and LaSalle's Nikko Sablone were each handed roughing penalties on the play. Marks was able to return to the game.

Legionnaires goalie Aidan Hughes made 35 saves on 37 shots while Paolo Battisti made 22 saves in the LaSalle net.

The Legionnaires were held scoreless on six powerplay chances including 1:47 of five on three time.

Sarnia's next game is Saturday night at home to the first place Leamington Flyers at Sarnia Arena. It's the annual Hockey Day in Sarnia game. All area minor league hockey players will get into the game free of charge.
