Mayor Pushes For Border Rebate Plan

The mayor of Sarnia is hopeful a road travel rebate incentive program could help boost tourism on this side of the border.

Mike Bradley says the program would make US visitors eligible for a five per cent rebate on the purchases they made while in Canada.

Bradley sent a letter to the Minister of Finance Bill Morneau, asking for the program to be considered in the 2016 budget.

He says its not the first time he's reached out to the federal government about the plan.

"This request went to the previous government and it wasn't in-acted in the budget, but I think the new government will look at this as a way of assisting with more tourism," says Bradley.

He says the program would be applied country wide in an effort to increase business and tourism for Canadian border towns.
