College and Sting Enter Formal Partnership

Lambton College and the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club have entered a formal partnership to enhance experience-based learning opportunities for students. The partnership was announced Monday morning at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre. Sting President Bill Abercrombie says they will offer co-op, internship and work placements to college students enrolled in Sports & Recreation Management and the newly created Fitness and Health Promotion programs. He says yearly Sting scholarships have also been established for two or three students who have worked with the organization. "I hope it attracts more students. For them, I'm sure its going to attract better students for us to put into our programs," says Abercrombie.

"We have hired many of them so it basically means we're going to have a much more confident workforce with the Sarnia Sting." Lambton College President Judith Morris says in turn, the Sting will have access to the new Athletics & Fitness Complex that's expected to break ground this spring. "They'll have state of the art equipment, the facilities will be state of the art. It just opens many other opportunities for them to be more physically agile and more physically fit for the game." The partnership will also open the door to collaborative applied research opportunities in the areas of exercise physiology and sport marketing research.

Abercrombie says student research opportunities in team analytics and statistics will benefit both parties.
