Petrolia Concerned Over Condition Of Tennis Courts

Petrolia council is following up on complaints that the newly resurfaced Mary Beach Tennis Courts are being damaged by the sticks of ball hockey players.

Mayor John McCharles says council has raised the issue with staff.

"It's not an easy fix, it's as simple as that" says McCharles. "There are a number of tennis people in Petrolia. I think one thing that should be done is they can be the monitors, they can actually be the caretakers. If enough people want to play tennis and want to form a tennis club, I think that's the route to go."

Staff is also looking into narrowing the entrance gates so hockey nets cannot be dragged onto the courts.

This summer, 13-year-old tennis enthusiast Matt Mueller raised $22,000 to help pay for the court's resurfacing. Canadian tennis star Milos Raonic donated the remaining $6,500 to complete the project.
