Majority Of Kenwick Place Residents Return Home

Most residents of the Kenwick Place apartment building, which was rendered uninhabitable due to a fire, were returning home this weekend.

Around 400 tenants were forced out of the George St. high-rise building when the fire broke out in the overhang of a third floor parking garage on Sunday.

Building owner Steeves and Rozema announced Friday night that residents of 231 units in the 18-storey building would be allowed back in after 12pm on Saturday. However, the residents of the remaining 11 units, located on the third and fourth floors, will not be able to regain access due to heavy damage. It is unknown when those apartment units will be habitable.

The building's "life safety systems" had reportedly been restored and verified to the satisfaction of local fire officials and elevators and emergency backup generators were back in working order.

Building officials say those returning home must first enter the building through the front door at George St. to document their safe return.
