Around The Clock Kenwick Restoration

Contractors and fire restoration specialists are working around the clock to try to get Kenwick Place fit for occupancy again.

Some 400 residents were forced out of the George St. apartment building when fire broke out in the overhang of the third floor parking garage early Sunday.

The cause was determined to be electrical in nature, involving the failure of a heating cable.

Building Owner Steeves and Rozema says work includes repairing key electrical services, fire safety systems, damaged water and sanitary lines, and areas affected by smoke, soot and water.

Elevators have already been repaired.

The company has set up a command centre on the first floor of the building to co-ordinate the restoration effort. They're also working with Canada Post in order to co-ordinate mail delivery.

There's still no timeline as to when residents can return home but it's expected those on floors five through 18 will be ready to come back first. Apartments on the third and fourth floors are more heavily damaged and will likely take longer to repair.
