Shell Canada was ordered to pay over $800,000 Tuesday after pleading guilty in provincial offences court to permitting a discharge of a contaminant at the Corunna site. The Ontario Environment Ministry says on January 11, 2013, the company discovered a flare knock-out line leak of liquid containing mercaptan. They say it caused a foul odour and flowed into a ditch on-site. MOE spokesperson Kate Jordan says a shelter in place order was issued for the area surrounding the refinery including Aamjiwnaang First Nation. [audio mp3="http://blackburnnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/Kate-1.mp3"][/audio] The odour resulted in numerous people at Aamjiwnaang complaining of sore eyes, throats, headaches, nausea and vomiting. Jordan says the charge was laid under the Environmental Protection Act. Shell Canada was fined $500,000, ordered to pay an additional $125,000 victim fine surcharge and issued a probation order requiring it to pay $200,000 to the Aamjiwnaang community within ten hours.
