MOL Investigating Alleged Stop Work Order Violation

Ontario's Ministry of Labour says it's actively investigating a complaint that work was being done at a power plant project in St. Clair Township while stop-work orders are in place.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the ministry warns that contravening such an order is a very serious violation that can lead to prosecution.

The ministry says there are currently 11 outstanding orders as well as four stop-work orders at Eastern Power's Green Electron power plant site on Oil Springs Line.

Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey says he's very concerned about reports that out-of-town personnel were on site on the weekend.

Toronto-based Eastern Power Ltd. is building a natural gas-fired combined cycle electricity generating facility with a capacity of about 300MW.

The project was relocated to St. Clair Township after Ontario's liberal government stopped work in Mississauga in advance of the 2011 provincial election.

About 200 local contractors staged information picket lines last week after having also withdrawn their services in April because of safety concerns.

Company officials have not been available for comment.
