Gas Power Plant Construction Halted

The Green Electron electricity plant under construction in St. Clair Township has been closed until further notice.

The Ministry of Labour yesterday issued stop work orders at the Greenfield Power site near Courtright following a growing concern by unions of unsafe working condition.

The ministry has issued 192 orders at the site including 27 stop work directives since construction began in 2013.

Ministry of Labour spokesperson William Lin says orders were issued Thursday.

About 200 workers staged information picket lines outlining safety concerns earlier this week and withdrew their services in April for the same reasons.

The site was closed in April for an inspection by government engineers who declared it structurally sound and re-opened it.

Labour Minister Kevin Flynn says he has directed the Labour Relations Division to reach out to both parties to work toward a resolution.

Company officials have not returned our repeated phone calls.
