Parents To Role Model Bike Helmets

Lambton Public Health is reminding adults they too need to wear helmets while cycling.

Health Promoter Kelley Elliott says parents need to be role models for children and show that bike helmets are important.

"When you don't wear your helmet that just sends mixed messages to the child and they're less likely to wear it," she says.

It's recommended for helmets to be fitted according to the 2V1 Rule.

While the helmet is level on your head, two fingers should fit between the top of your eyebrows and the top of the helmet, one finger should fit beneath the chin strap to keep it tight, and the straps on the side of the helmet form a 'V' underneath your ears.

Elliott adds that helmets expire within five years from the date of manufacture and should never be bought second-hand.

Based on local emergency room visits in 2013, 20-44 year-old's were the highest age group for cycling injuries.

Bike helmets can reduce the risk of serious injury and death by up to 85 per cent.
