Heat Alert, Air Quality Statement Issued

Lambton's Medical Officer of Health issued a Heat Alert Tuesday. It was based on humidex values over 36 C in combination with a special air quality statement. Lambton Public Health recommends time outdoors be limited between the hours of 11am and 4pm when an alert is in effect. Drink lots of water and avoid moderate to intense physical activity. Those without air conditioning can go to a mall, library or community centre, or visit a designated cooling centre location.

Sarnia's reading on the new Air Quality Health Index hit 7 at mid afternoon Tuesday which is high risk on the scale of 1 to 10. The general population was advised to consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous activites outdoors if symptoms like coughing and throat irritation are experienced. Children, seniors and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk in such conditions. The index represents the outdoor mix of harmful pollutants including ground level ozone, fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide. A Special Air Quality Statement ended in the late afternoon.
